You may not have a baby in your arms yet, but Mother’s Day can still be a day to mark. If the last few months have been tiring or hard, a day set aside to relax may be exactly what you need. Here are ten ideas.
1. Have a spa day
Book a manicure and pedicure, on your own or with friends. If you’d rather stay in, some salons will come to you.
2. Book a pregnancy massage
Pregnancy can bring aches and swelling, and many people find a massage helps them unwind. Pregnancy massage is generally considered safe after the first trimester, but check with your midwife before you book.
3. Have a maternity photo shoot
Photos are a way to remember how you looked and felt during this time. You could combine the shoot with a spa day and have your hair and make-up done too.
4. Make a memory box
For something quieter, fill a box with scan pictures, maternity photos and other keepsakes from your pregnancy, and open it on a Mother’s Day a few years from now.
5. Write a letter to your baby
Write down what you imagine they’ll be like: who they might look like, what might make them laugh, what kind of person they might become. Keep it in your memory box as a record of this time, and something to give your child when they’re older.
6. Have brunch with friends
If you’re the first of your friends to be pregnant, Mother’s Day is a good reason to get everyone together. Choose somewhere with plenty on the menu that’s safe to eat in pregnancy.
7. Go away for the weekend
A weekend away with your partner is a chance to rest and spend time together before your family grows. If you’re thinking of travelling, check with your midwife that it’s suitable for your stage of pregnancy. A night or two somewhere close to home can be just as restful.
8. Decorate the nursery
Use the day to plan or decorate the nursery: choose paint colours, furniture and accessories, or order them online beforehand. Let your partner or friends do the heavy lifting.
9. Go for a picnic
If the weather is good, pack some sandwiches and snacks and spend the day in the park with your partner, family or friends.
10. Stay in and get comfortable
Sometimes the best way to spend a special day is on the sofa in your pyjamas, catching up on a book, a series or a film.
