How it works
How your due date is worked out
- 1From your last periodMost due dates are worked out from the first day of your last period. Pregnancy is counted from that day, so you’re already about 2 weeks ‘pregnant’ when you conceive. If your cycle is longer or shorter than 28 days, the date moves to match.
- 2From conceptionIf you know when you conceived, your due date is about 38 weeks after that.
- 3From IVFWith IVF the transfer date and the age of the embryo give a precise starting point, so your clinic’s date is usually very close to this one.
A due date is an estimate, not a deadline. Your midwife will confirm it at your dating scan. If you have any bleeding, pain or are worried about anything, contact your GP, midwife or maternity unit.
